Modern Foreign Language - French
Intent
At Rowley Lane, we aim to provide a comprehensive and engaging language education program that enables our pupils to develop a strong foundation in communication skills and cultural understanding. We believe that learning a language is not only a valuable skill but also promotes cognitive development, cross-cultural awareness and empathy towards diverse communities. Through our language curriculum, we aim to foster a love for languages and inspire our pupils to become lifelong language learners. We strive to provide an inclusive environment that values and celebrates linguistic diversity and encourages our pupils to appreciate and respect different cultures. Our goal is to equip pupils with the language skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly globalised world.
Implementation
We follow the Twinkl scheme of work for French. This ensures full coverage and clear progression and gives excellent and comprehensive guidance to teachers who are non-French speaking. Lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammar are given. Revision of key vocabulary and grammatical structures is built into each lesson; this vocabulary is then included in a variety of differentiated resources so that pupils have the opportunity to repeat and fully embed their learning. Objectives, activities and resources help pupils to build on prior knowledge alongside the introduction of new skills and each unit is planned to provide structure and context as well as offering an insight into the culture of French speaking countries and communities. In lower KS2, learning is heavily focused on building a good knowledge of basic vocabulary and simple grammatical structures, taught largely through songs and games, progressing to the application of this in order to support the understanding and use of more complex vocabulary and grammatical structures, reading longer paragraphs and writing at greater length in upper KS2. All lessons include the different strands of language learning: speaking and listening, reading and writing.
