Year 1 - Caterpillar Class & Canary Class
In September 2024 our PE Days will be:
Tuesday & Friday
Science- This half term in Science we are looking at the season ‘Winter’. We went on a wintry walk and spotted deciduous and evergreen trees; we were also looking for signs of winter.
Year One have been cooking Breakfast Frittatas; all of the children tried their frittatas. Well done Year One!
All About Year 1...
In Year 1 we learn to be more independent in our work. We still get to learn through play in our Discovery Area.
Our teachers are:
Mrs Kettlewell (Caterpillar Class) Mrs Horsfield & Mrs May (Canary Class.
In Year 1 we go into assembly.
In Year 1 there is a chance to take part in a running competition against other schools. We practice by doing the 1k-a-day. We also get lots of opportunities to be active throughout the school day during our learning time.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday
Please make sure your child wears the correct PE uniform and has their hair tied back.

Please be aware Phonics screening will take place In June 2025 for all children in Year 1.
To support with embedding their knowledge of the different phonemes and graphemes they are learning.
Homework
Maths/English
Homework will be handed out on a Wednesday. The work will be in a homework book, just like in Reception. All the work will link to the work being taught in class. It may have an English, Phonics or a Maths focus.
Spellings
Spellings will begin in the Spring term. Your child's spellings will be linked to the Little Wandle programme. These will be brought home and tested at school. More information will follow closer to the time.
Reading:
The children will read three times a week in school in their group with an adult. The children will bring home their Phonic book and their shared reading book after their third read in school. We ask that their Phonic book and shared reading book is returned on the following Monday. Please record any reading in the child's reading record.
